Article excerpt

The Middleburg girls golf team (17-2) continued its winning ways

by capturing the Florida Star Conference championship last week

at the Palatka Country Club.

Middleburg won with a team score of 412 followed by Palatka

with 458, Orange Park with 472 and St. Augustine with 538.

Couch Mary Beth Radigan said the win was fun for the girls. She

said the Broncos took three of the top five places, including

senior Tasha Webb, who was the medalist with a 92. Second was

senior Susan Terry with a 102 and third was senior Renata

Carvalho with a 105.

Radigan said the team has worked hard in the past few weeks to

improve its short game.

The Broncos will be defending last year's county championship

tomorrow at the Ravines. The shotgun start will be at 2 p.m.

involving Middleburg, St. Johns Country Day, Orange Park, Clay

High and Keystone Heights.

Last week, Gonce hit two home runs to raise his total to eight

for the year. He also had 7 hits, including three doubles and

nine runs batted in. On the season, his batting average is .453

with 28 RBI.

Thompson said Gonce's performance is even more impressive
