Ailing Seles Loses Ranking Points

AMELIA ISLAND -- The timing of coming down with bronchitis

couldn't have been worse for Monica Seles.

Due to the new ranking system by the Corel WTA Tour, Seles is

missing out on valuable ranking points after withdrawing from

the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island Plantation

Tuesday. Seles bowed out after having a temperature of 103

degrees.

During a conference call from Sarasota yesterday, Seles said

her temperature remains high.

Seles was looking forward to making her first appearance at the

Amelia Island tournament.

"It's not the greatest because I obviously needed to play some

tennis so I can move up in the rankings," she said. "But I just

have to get through it and try to come back again."

Her recent illness comes at a time when Seles was just starting

to get in a groove. She had made the final in both the Lipton

Championships and the Family Circle Magazine Cup last week.

"It could have waited one more week," Seles said. …
