Keeping Quiet Bowden Thinks Spurrier Has Agenda

Article excerpt

TALLAHASSEE -- Florida State coach Bobby Bowden didn't want any

part of the Sugar Bowl rematch with Florida, but the "Redux on

the Bayou" between the No. 1 Seminoles and No. 3 Gators is set

for Jan. 2.

Bowden remains steadfast in his effort to refrain from a war of

words with Florida coach Steve Spurrier. Spurrier has repeatedly

insisted that the Seminoles went out of their way to injure

Gators quarterback Danny Wuerffel in FSU's 24-21 victory in

Tallahassee on Nov. 30.

On Sunday, Spurrier declared "war on the Seminoles" and vowed

retaliation if Florida State's defenders attempted to knock

Wuerffel out of the game. FSU sacked the Florida quarterback six

times, knocked him down countless others and drew a pair of

roughing-the-passer penalties in the process of securing a berth

in the Bowl Alliance's premier game.

"I think I know Steve good enough that what he says, I don't

let it get to me that much," Bowden said. "He's a competitor,

and anything he says to fire us up suits me."

Denying that his team plays dirty, Bowden termed Spurrier's

allegations nothing more than a ploy to influence the Big 12

officiating crew scheduled to work the Sugar Bowl.

"I think he's getting that next group of officials for that

bowl game all baited up," Bowden said yesterday. "He'll have

them guys so shell-shocked, we'll play touch."

The Gators and Seminoles -- two of the nation's most penalized

teams -- have already engaged in one game of flag football.

over Florida, which in turn was flagged seven times for 80

yards.

The physical nature of the first game came as no surprise to

Bowden, considering the stakes -- No. 1 vs. No. 2 -- and the

intense rivalry.

"Let me tell you something, whoever has got that ball in their

hands attracts a crowd," Bowden said. …
