The rumors continue to be thrown around about Jaguars coach Tom

Coughlin, and -- as was the case two weeks ago when he was

linked to the then-soon-to-be-vacant Notre Dame job -- there

appears to be little credence.

This week's model:

Coughlin to New York to replace Giants coach Dan Reeves, who is

expected to resign or be fired after this season. The New York

Post last week wrote that Coughlin was a possibility for the

The Giants/Coughlin rumor has a historical link. Coughlin was

wide receivers coach for the Giants from 1988-90. Coughlin,

however, reportedly turned down the Giants head job in 1993.


The Jaguars broke a 10-game road losing streak Sunday, and did

so after the players and coaches spent the week talking about

needing to break the streak.

So, how does Coughlin describe the end of the streak?

No big deal.

"Obviously, the press has been so much concerned about winning

on the road that it builds itself and becomes an issue," said

Coughlin, now 3-12 on the road as Jaguars coach.


They say Coughlin is detail-oriented and a perfectionist.

How's this for proof of it?

One of the aspects of Sunday's game in which he was

disappointed was that no Jaguars receiver got in proper position

to make the tip on the Hail Mary attempt from Jaguars QB Mark

Brunell at the end of regulation. As a result, Ravens S Eric

Turner intercepted.

"I don't want to call that play and see the ball turned over --

even in that situation," Coughlin said. "Someone had to go up

and tip the ball."

Coughlin said the situation will be addressed.


The Jaguars have signed wide receiver Jimmy Smith to a twoyear

contract extension, a move that will take Smith off the

freeagent market in February. …
