Bluegrass Expo Should Be a Foot-Stomping Good Time

Article excerpt

Hot picking and old-style dancing will be the order of the day at

the third annual Bluegrass Expo, scheduled to be held tomorrow

10:30 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Flamingo Lake Campground, located at

Lem Turner Road and Interstate 295.

Staged by the North Florida Bluegrass Association, the event

features music, exhibits by expert luthiers -- craftsmen who

specialize in stringed instruments -- and other activities.

There will be a round of instructional workshops starting at 11

a.m. covering guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and upright bass

techniques. Alan Shadd, who will perform with his group later in

the day, will conduct the flat-picking workshop. Shadd recently

placed second at the national guitar flat-picking contest in

Winfield, Kan.

Music starts at 11 a.m., and features a performance by the

South Carolina-based Carolina Rebels. Jacksonville area bands

include First Coast Bluegrass, Jax Grass, the Restless Rebels,

and Gentle River, Florida Line, and Home Slice. Admission is $4.

Kajagoogoo and Nena. After taking a two-year break from

recording, they are back with a new lineup and a new CD,

Everything is Mad . You can catch them tonight at the Milk Bar,

128 W. Adams St., starting at 8 p.m. Local ska-sters Scholars

Word opens. Admission is $5 . . . Also tonight, country star

Kenny Chesney will play the Crazy Horse Saloon, 5800 Philips

Highway. Unlike some country acts that seem to rise to the top

virtually overnight, Chesney was a slowburner. His 1993 debut

album on Capricorn records was met with lukewarm promotional

muscle; 1995's All I Need to Know finally pushed him into the

spotlight. His latest, Me and You, was released this summer on

BNA Records. …
