BEUERLEIN TO START

In one of the more ironic twists imaginable for the so-called

"Expansion Bowl" between the Jaguars and Panthers, QB Steve

Beuerlein -- a starter in six games for the Jaguars last season

-- will start for the Panthers Sunday when the teams meet at

Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

Beuerlein, the first selection of last year's expansion draft by

the Jaguars, began last season as Jacksonville's starter, but

was replaced by Mark Brunell. He signed a three-year deal with

the Panthers in the off-season to be the top backup to Kerry

Collins. With Collins unable to play against the 49ers last

weekend because of a knee injury, Beuerlein started, threw two

touchdowns and led the Panthers to a 23-7 upset victory.

The decision to start Beuerlein was made by Carolina coach Dom

Capers late yesterday afternoon when Collins tested the knee and

was not 100 percent.

"What I'm doing right now is exactly what they brought me here to

do -- play, and hopefully play well and get the job done until

Kerry's ready to take over," Beuerlein said.

SECONDARY CHANGES

Two days after releasing starting CB Vinnie Clark, the Jaguars

continued making changes to their defensive backfield.

One day after terminating CB Rashid Gayle from the practice

squad, Gayle was signed to the active roster yesterday. Also,

the Jaguars claimed CB Ricky Bell off waivers from Pittsburgh

and waived LB Brant Boyer, who was signed on Tuesday. However,

Boyer could be brought back sometime soon.

Bell, who was not at practice yesterday, had signed with the

Steelers as an undrafted rookie in April. He had been on the

team's active roster the past two weeks before being waived

Monday.

The Jaguars also moved WR Curtis Marsh to cornerback. Marsh has

switched from jersey No. 89 to No. 22 to accommodate the switch.

In addition, rookie CB Aaron Beasley practiced in pads yesterday

for the first time since fracturing his shoulder blade in the

preseason. …
