PGA Tour on Target for Third TPC Course

Article excerpt

The rejection by St. Johns County voters last week to fund the

Palm Valley Park on land offered by the Davis family hasn't

changed the PGA Tour's plans to build a third golf course at the

Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass.

Vernon Kelly, the head of the Tour's Tournament Players Club

Network, promised a "bigname architect" would be hired and said

the time for moving beyond the planning stage for the course is

close -- despite that the Tour was counting on the use of the

Davis' 170-acre tract of land for parking during the week of The

Players Championship.

Kelly would not identify any potential architects, but Tim

Freeland, Senior Design Associate for the Gary Player Group

(which is designing the TPC Jasna Polana in New Jersey),

speculated that if his company did not get the contract, the

description of a "big-name architect" fits only a few other

designers and specifically mentioned Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio.

"Certainly we hope that we would get that opportunity," said

Freeland. "A lot depends on how happy [the PGA Tour] is with our

job on Jasna Pola-na. But if they decide to use someone else, I

think the term `big-name' would almost have to mean a Tom Fazio

or Jack Nicklaus."

Fazio and Nicklaus could not be reached for comment.

Representatives at their course design offices said they had no

knowledge that their companies were bidding for the rights to

design the course.

Fazio designed the new Pablo Creek Golf Club, scheduled for a

November opening, and Osprey Cove in St. Mary's, Ga. Nicklaus

has not designed a course in the Jacksonville area.

Pete Dye, the architect of the Players Club Stadium and Valley

Courses, will not be involved in a third course at Sawgrass,

Kelly said. Representatives of Palmer Course Design and McCumber

Golf said those companies have not been contacted by the PGA

Tour about a third course.

Current plans call for the course to be built on land along

State Road 210, much of which has been used for public parking

during the week of The Players. …
