Sandalwood Recruiting Runners the Coach Is New; 4 of Top 6 Are New to Cross-Country

Article excerpt

The Sandalwood High boys cross-country team not only has a

first-year coach in newcomer Duane Hagstrom, but has several

first-year runners.

Of the Saints' top six runners, four have never run for the

varsity. Junior Charles McCumber is the most experienced member

of the squad with two varsity seasons in his running shoes.

Senior Mac Knox, who runs track and field for the Saints, has

never run crosscountry but is giving it a try this year.

"On the first day of practice we only had three or four guys

show up," said Hagstrom. "But our principal is a big supporter

of crosscountry and he was helping get kids on this team. He'll

pull people out of classrooms and ask them if they want to run

for us."

At a meet last week, the Saints finished fifth out of six teams

but McCumber finished with the second-best time (18:35).

"As long as we're showing consistent progress then I'm

satisfied," said Hagstrom.

ROUGH START -- Considering what Sandalwood's volleyball team

lost from its 26-4 district championship team last year, you

would think a 5-3 start this year wouldn't be that bad.

For head coach Carlyce Cononie though, 5-3 isn't meeting her

expectations, especially when it includes a loss to White.

"I'm a little disappointed in the Ed White loss," Cononie said

before her Wednesday practice. "It was just one of those nights

where everything went wrong."

Sandalwood improved to 5-3 Tuesday, with a 15-2, 15-7 win

against Paxon. Junior Leslie Meissner led in serves and aces in

the game with 9 winners and 6 aces.

Things could be a lot worse than 5-3 for Sandalwood considering

the Saints lost five of last year's six starters and returned

just one senior, Meisha Newman, to the team.

"Meshia came in and out of the game for us last year," Cononie

said. …
