Johnnetta B. Cole, president of Spelman College, announced

yesterday she will resign next year and join the faculty at

Emory University. A committee hopes to have a new president

before next June.

Cole, 59, will leave her post June 30 after a decade of

leadership at the century-old black women's college. "Obviously,

this is a sad moment for me," Cole said. "I love Spelman College

intensely. But if you really love an institution, person or

idea, you can't possess it. You have to let it go."

Since Cole became president in 1987, Spelman has increased its

private endowments from about $40 million to $143 million. The

Atlanta college was named the No. 1 regional liberal arts

in the Money magazine's top 10 best buys four years in a row.

Her tenure has seen the start of several new programs at

Spelman, including a corporate partnership and mentor program

with the Atlanta business community, an international affairs

center and faculty exchanges.
