Mace Deadly on Foes Trinity Christian Has Volleyball Star

Article excerpt

Kristen Mace hasn't been elected captain of Trinity

Christian's team yet, but some people in the city are ready to

crown her queen of this year's volleyball crop.

"I'd like to know who those people are," the 5-foot-6 junior

says modestly.

But Mace is on the verge of getting a lot of attention in the

next two years. As a sophomore, Mace burst onto the local -- and

national -- volleyball scene, earning a spot on the All-First

Coast first team and even being named as an honorable mention

All-American in Parade Magazine. She returns this year having

"She's looking real good," said Miller, a first-year varsity

coach who took over for Debbie Christian after last season. "She

improved her strength on spiking and improved her

decisionmaking. It's really going to be hard to block her this

year."

While the sound of spikes echoed in the background of the

Trinity gym last week, Mace calmly talked about the days when

she was a softball player, a tennis player, or competing in any

hsport where she could use her natural athletic ability. It

wasn't until the seventh grade that she gave volleyball a try.

a decision that changed Mace's life.

"I used to play tennis and my mom said I am too much of an

individual sports person and I would hate volleyball," Mace

said. "But I went to play spring volleyball and I've been

playing it ever since."

Last season, Mace recorded 189 kills from the outside-hitter

spot in leading Trinity to a 20-5 regular-season record and the

District 4-2A title. This year, the Conquerors return a mostly

inexperienced team, but another district title is not out of the

question. …
