Transfer Matured Frazier

Article excerpt

Chip Frazier gets a little annoyed when talking about his

transfer from Trinity Christian to White prior to last season.

"Everybody thought that when I came over to White I thought I

was a big-shot," he said. "I was coming to play for the team. I

wanted to help get a state title and bring it to Ed White.

That's all I wanted."

He has the same goal in 1996, but this season he'll be doing

more to reach that goal.

Last season, Frazier sat behind incumbent running backs Vannez

Gooch (a Florida State signee) and Brady Turpin (Army), both of

whom rushed for more than 1,000 yards. So Frazier went from 906

yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman in 1993 and 1,256 yards

and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore at Trinity to less than 100

yards.

"A lot of kids aren't willing to come in, especially ones that

were 1,000-yard rushers, and are willing to sit," White coach

Dan Disch said. "Gooch and Turpin are gone, and they were good

players. There were a lot of guys who would have transferred in

and would have sat behind them. He was real mature about it."

That's in contrast to rumors that Frazier reported lazy,

unwilling to work, and with a bad attitude.

"I'm not a guy like that," he said. "I'm not a guy who's going

to go out and get four carries and get mad at the coach. It's a

coach's decision. I'm not a person who's going to go out there

and make a scene. That's not me, I'm a nice guy."

Disch also disputed the rumors.

"He was fine with me when he came over," he said. "I always

thought he had a good attitude."

And a good appetite. The 5-foot-10 Frazier, who bench presses

more than 300 pounds, ballooned to about 250 pounds by spring

practice, but has worked to shed 15 pounds. …
