Christmas presents

It was Christmas in August for three anglers from Waycross,

Ga., last Saturday.

Donnie Laughinghouse, John Spivey and Mike Dowling, fishing in

Christmas Creek on Cumberland Island, caught an incredible 44

flounder in 1 1/2 hours.

"It was as fast as we could throw it out," is how Laughinghouse

described the action. "I've caught 30 or 35 a number of times

over a five- or six-hour period, but never like this."

The trio caught most of the flounder on trout slip-bobber rigs.

But instead of setting the float so that the live shrimp bait

would suspend above the bottom, they adjusted the cork to

slightly lean over, bouncing the bait along the bottom.

The biggest flounder measured 22 inches, and all came from the

same place. "I'm talking about a spot 15 feet from one end to

the other," Laughinghouse said.

PETA protests

As promised, protestors from the People for the Ethical

Treatment of Animals made an appearance at the recent BASS

Masters Classic tournament in Birmingham, Ala., but there were

no disruptions in fishing.

PETA member Angela Kneale dressed in a Gill the Fish costume

and held a placard that read "Get Hooked on Compassion." Another

PETA member, Davey Shepherd, said the Classic was chosen for the

group's first tournament protest because of its national

stature. …
