JUSTICE ON MEND

Just last week the possibility seemed farfetched, but the

Atlanta Braves now are seriously considering the possibility of

right fielder David Justice being available for the postseason.

"The way I saw him swing the bat, there's no doubt he could do

something," manager Bobby Cox said. "But I think there's some

concern about stretching the shoulder." Justice, who underwent

surgery on his right shoulder in May, is swinging at soft-toss

pitches and hitting balls off a tee. Doctors said in May that he

would need nine months to fully recover, but here he is three

months later talking about the playoffs. "I'd love to play in

the playoffs," Justice said. "All I can do is try and get my

shoulder strong, the sooner, the better. Now, if it's sooner . .

."

TRAVELIN' MAN

All that traveling is finally paying off for Mark Whiten, who is

with his seventh major-league team. He did something last week

that never has been done -- hit home runs in back-to-back

at-bats, as a pinch hitter, in each league. He homered Aug. 13

against the Phillies, as a Brave, then homered Aug. 16 in New

York in his first at-bat as a Mariner. …
