The much-heralded Daunte Culpepper couldn't have scripted a

better start to his collegiate career last year.

After being sacked on his first play from scrimmage, the

6-foot-4, 230-pound quarterback completed five passes in a row,

capped off by a 24-yard touchdown pass to Rufus Hall. Culpepper

and Hall would hook up for two more scores in Central Florida's

40-32 upset over fifthranked Eastern Kentucky.

By the middle of UCF's second game, the two had connected on 11

passes. That was before Hall went down with a season-ending knee

injury. Hall's injury left Culpepper without an experienced

receiver. As a result, UCF's offense sputtered.

"Those of you who've kept up with UCF football over the years

know that if we can't throw the ball, then we're not very good

offensively," UCF coach Gene McDowell said. "The reason for that

is we've never been very physical."

Culpepper managed to complete 57 percent of his passes as a

freshman for 2,071 yards and 12 touchdowns as the Knights

finished 6-5. …
