Do-It-All Brown Too Busy to Count Stats

For those of you planning to attend Hamilton County games this

fall, here's a little reminder: Alex Brown wears No. 3.

Officially, the all-everything linebacker who was named Hamilton

County's Most Valuable Player in 1995 didn't even lead the

Tigers in tackles last season.

Officially.

In reality, said Brown: "I was No. 3 and [linebacker Derrick

Simmons] was No. 33 and sometimes that can get confusing to some

people."

Statisticians, in particular.

But Brown didn't have time to count his tackles last year

because while the rest of the defense came to the sideline for a

breather, he stayed on the field as either a quarterback,

receiver or kicker.

He'll do the same this year, possibly as the starting quarterback.

"I just go out and do what I can," said Brown, who wants to

sign a scholarship with North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson

or Nebraska. "Any way I can help the team, I do it."

When football season ends, Brown will return to the school's

basketball team and then he'll defend his state discus title, go

for a state 110-meter hurdles championship and try to qualify

for the state weightlifting finals again.

It's all part of the player who hopes to lead Hamilton County to

a successful season.

The Tigers finished 5-5 last year with an inexperienced team and

expect much more this time around with 12 returning starters. …
