Monts Not Planning on Relocating Series

Location. Location. Location. Sometimes it's the difference

between a successful race and a bust.

Just ask Larry Monts.

For the past 19 years, Monts has directed the Run for Fun

Olympics Distance Series, a series of nine races over three

months, and he has seen the popularity rise and fall depending

on where the races are held.

Among the sites where the series has been held are the Florida

Community College at Jacksonville's Kent Campus, one of the more

popular sites, and the North Campus, where the number of

entrants has been below par.

The latter has been the site of the series since Monts, a

physical education teacher, was transferred there in 1980.

Runners continue to beg Monts to move the series to FCCJ's

South Campus on Beach Boulevard, but he is resisting. He wants

the series kept at FCCJ's North Campus, located on Dunn Avenue

between Interstate-295 and I-95, five miles from First Coast

High School.

"As long as Larry Monts is running it, it will be at the North

Campus," Monts said. "The big disadvantage is that we're not

near a population center. Out here, virtually, we're on a

dead-end street. The only reason you'd come down this road is to

come down here. …
