New Carts Reign at Queen's Harbour

Article excerpt

The high-tech cart experiment at Queen's Harbour has turned out

better than head professional Tom Stecker could have dreamed.

It has been most of the spring and an entire summer since the

Southside club installed the Pro Shot Global Positioning

Satellite System into all 80 of its carts, and despite a $45,000

per year lease tab, Stecker said the system is here to stay.

"We will continue to use it and there are even more things we

can do once we get all of the software installed," said Stecker.

"There have been very, very few problems with it."

The main benefit of the carts is that yardage to the front,

middle and back of the greens -- and to various landmarks on the

fairways of par 4s and par 5s -- is displayed on a small console

on the steering wheel. Stecker said the largest discrepancy has

been 3 yards and players usually get measurements to within 1

yard.

That improves the pace of play, since players don't have to

look for yardage markers or pace the distance off from their

ball to the markers. Stecker estimates that the pace of play at

Queen's Harbour has improved by an average of 10 minutes per

round.

Each cart's progress and location can be monitored at the pro

shop, so players who are taking too long can be found quickly

and warned.
