Cleveland Swails of Jacksonville and his 8-year-old grandson,

Josh Langham, did almost everything together this summer.

Sadly, the two best friends spent their last moments together

yesterday afternoon.

Swails, 73, and Josh were paddling a small boat and trying to

install an aerator when it overturned and the two drowned in a

backyard pond on Jacksonville's Westside about 4 p.m.

"They were so close," said Myrtice Nester, a family friend and

fellow member of West Normandy Baptist Church. "He [Josh]

worshiped the ground his granddaddy walked on, and Mr. Swails

did, too."

The two drowned after becoming trapped beneath the aluminum

boat when it flipped over in the murky, 12-foot-deep pond.

The pond is on property Swails owns, about 200 yards behind

some homes in the 2300 block of Parrish Cemetery Road on the

west end of Herlong Airport.

Police said neither was wearing a life preserver when fire and

rescue divers pulled them from the pond.

Swails was dead when he was pulled from the water, said police
