Hilliard Man Charged in 1987 Slaying

A Hilliard man was charged yesterday with sneaking into an

apartment through an attic in 1987 and stabbing to death a

13-year-old girl, police announced on the ninth anniversary of

the crime.

Wayne Keith Mason, a former neighbor of the girl, was jailed

yesterday on charges of murder and burglary.

The 39-year-old Hilliard man, who goes by the nickname of

"Punkin," was being held without bond.

The victim, Danielle Stewart, was found dead Aug. 10, 1987, in

her bedroom at Cumberland Forest apartments on Arlington

Expressway. Her mother made the discovery about 11:40 a.m. when

she came home from work for lunch.

The girl had been stabbed 22 times in the head, chest, neck and

upper body, Jacksonville sheriff's Lt. David Gueterman said. He

said the case was cracked by a multiagency cold-case squad that

takes a fresh look at aging crimes.

"Investigation revealed that the suspect entered the victim's

apartment through the attic, which was only accessible from his

next-door apartment attic," an arrest report said. …
