Skateboard Fall Kills 18-Year-Old Pulled by Pickup, Teen Loses Control

A Jacksonville teenager died yesterday of massive head injuries

after he fell from a skateboard while being pulled by a pickup

truck, police said.

Robert T. Bierbaum III, 18, was injured at 12:38 a.m. in the

4700 block of Queen Lane, police said. The accident occurred

about a block from his home on Prince Edward Road in Ortega

Forest, said his stepfather, Bill Kuntz.

Police said Bierbaum was on a skateboard and hanging onto a

pickup driven by William Andrews, 18, of the 4600 block of Arlon

Lane. Police said the truck was traveling about 10 to 15 mph

when Bierbaum let go and lost control of the skateboard.

Bierbaum, who was not wearing a helmet, hit his head on the

road and was cut on the shoulder. He was taken to University

Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m.

Andrews was cited with failing to carry or exhibit a driver's

license, said Lt. Lonnie McDonald of the Jacksonville Sheriff's
