The Chicken Updates Act, but He Rarely Lays an Egg

The Famous Chicken has outlived several of America's more

popular fads over the last three decades. Since he introduced

the wacky bird in 1974, the Chicken's alter ego, Ted Giannoulas,

has seen the likes of the pet rock, Cabbage Patch dolls, punk

music and the Rubik's Cube come and go.

But the Chicken's antics remain popular.

"It's easy," said Giannoulas, who will be in costume tonight at

Wolfson Park as the Suns play host to Memphis for a 7:35 game.

"I'm inspired by a lot of comedy. I can parody so many different

things."

While studying to be a sports writer at San Diego State, the

campus radio station hired Giannoulas for a promotional stint at

a local zoo wearing a chicken outfit. The 10-day tryout turned

into a fiveyear stint with the station, and from there he built

a venture that has over 200 bookings a year.

But as more and more people have seen him around the world,

Giannoulas has found the need to update his act. …
