TRYING TO BE THE GUY NFL Scouts Impressed with Kanell

Article excerpt

MOBILE, Ala. -- The Guy.

When the college football season begins each fall, every college

quarterback has his eye on earning that title, which means being

the top quarterback in the following year's NFL Draft.

Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell is close to being The

Guy.

This week at the Senior Bowl, Kanell has impressed scouts enough

that he just may end up being the first quarterback selected

this April in the draft.

In what is a very important week for Kanell, he has played well

enough to earn praise from coaches and scouts.

"He's had a great week," said Ron Turner, the offensive

coordinator for the Chicago Bears who is working closely with

Kanell this week as the Bears staff coaches the South team. "He

looks good, he's done a nice job. He's thrown the ball well,

he's a smart kid, a good athlete. I'm impressed with him."

"Dan has looked good," said former NFL quarterback Doug

Williams, who is now a scout for the Jacksonville Jaguars. "He

is athletic and he has the ability to make all the throws."

Unlike the past few years, most scouts don't consider there to

be a top quarterback in this draft. There is no Drew Bledsoe, no

Heath Shuler, no Kerry Collins.

No one who will warrant a top 10 pick.

Just Danny Kanell and a few others vying to be the top guy.

Whether that top guy is a premier quarterback remains to be

seen. That's what makes this week so important for Kanell.

"It's something I've been looking forward to for a long time,"

he said. "Ever since I was contemplating coming here, I knew it

would be a big week for me. Especially with a lot of question

marks the coaches and scouts have about me.

"I want to come here this week and answer those questions for

them."

One is definitely not his size. At 6 feet 3, 215 pounds, Kanell

has the look of the prototype quarterback.

Some scouts, however, have questioned his mobility. Others have

questioned his arm strength. …
