Freaknik a `success'

Atlanta's mayor yesterday declared Freaknik a "great success"

and said the city's handling of this year's throng of cruising

college students proves it is ready for the Olympics.

"For us as a city, it was a great success," Mayor Bill Campbell

said. "For anyone who would use this as an analysis for the

Olympics . . . we have proven once again that Atlanta is capable

of handling anything."

The mayor said he received positive words from the community

and from students who came for the party. He credited police and

city sanitation teams for keeping the city safe and clean for

the weekend bash.

Campbell's feelings were shared by Police Chief Beverly Harvard

, who said she would give police and revelers an "A" for their

behavior.

A combination of smaller crowds and more police officers proved

that the annual cruising bash, which some believed is

unstoppable, is at least partially controllable.

Mammoth traffic jams and widespread lewd behavior in recent

years has made the black college spring fling a yearly nuisance

for Atlanta residents. This year, Atlanta's entire 1,500-officer

police force was on the streets to control the crowd and

numerous traffic barriers went up to discourage cruising.

The party didn't stop, but revelers and police alike agreed it

had been tamed.

Freaknik fizzled to a close early Monday with the last few

revelers going strong at a few clubs as late as 5 a.m. By

daybreak, barricades were removed and traffic had returned to

normal.
