Leaning on the Brotherhood Rogers Got Help from Heisman Family in Time of Need

PONTE VEDRA BEACH -- When you're in trouble, lonely, frightened

and desperate, it's only natural to turn toward home.

Home on several fronts is what saved George Rogers. The drugs

he both used and sold nearly cost him his life, but he said he

was more fortunate than most people. He not only had his natural

family to pull him through, but had the support of the

University of South Carolina community and his brethren of

Heisman Trophy winners.

"The guys who have won Heismans are very close, and they never

forgot me," said Rogers, who was in the area yesterday to help

promote the eighth annual Heisman Foundation Golf Classic, which

will be played June 1-2 at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club and

Windsor Parke. "Neither did the people at South Carolina."

Rogers is one of 22 Heisman winners scheduled to play in the

tournament, which is in the area for the second consecutive

year. Among the others currently committed are John David Crow,

Doak Walker, Angelo Bertelli, Johnny Lattner, Steve Owens and

the first Heisman winner, Jay Berwanger.

Crow and Walker will receive special recognition from the

Heisman committee at the awards dinner. Each year at the Heisman

Foundation Classic, a set of past winners is honored.

A portion of the tournament's proceeds will go to the Police

Athletic League of St. Johns County and the Navy USO, and the

rest to charities designated by Crow and Walker.

Rogers said the support he received from fellow Heisman winners

and the committee is why he vigorously promotes this event. That

and his golf game, which he pronounces very healthy at a

14-handicap.

"They were people who stood behind me at my lowest," Rogers

said. "If it were not for them, I wouldn't be here. That's why I

do everything I can to give something back for them and the

cause of the Heisman Foundation. …
