Call Licensing Board to Check Contractors

Article excerpt

Dear Call Box: A contractor is doing some awning work on

my home. He has just a post office box. I'm suspicious. -- J.G.

Dear J.G.: The lack of a street address and phone number are

signs of possible fraud. Throw in out-of-state license plates on

an unmarked truck and it really looks suspicious.

To find out if a contractor is licensed, call the Florida

Construction Industry Licensing Board at 727-6530, 8 a.m. to

4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Also check for a complaint

record at the Division of Consumer Affairs at 630-3667 and the

Better Business Bureau at 721-2288.

In addition, the Division of Consumer Affairs warns consumers to

be cautious of door-to-door home improvement solicitors who:

Claim they've finished a job and have materials left.

Refuse to give you a written estimate or contract.

Ask you to obtain any necessary building permits.

Ask for payment up front.

Try to pressure you to make a decision on the spot. …
