`Ed' Throws Monkeywrench in Blanc Debut

Watching Matt LeBlanc gamely trying to make something out of

the disaster that is Ed, you can't help but think: He sure could

have used a little help from his Friends.

No such luck. Instead he's stuck for much of the movie talking

one-on-one with a gymnast in a monkey suit.

We'll grant that it's an extremely realistic monkey suit, but

the only sounds that emanate from it are a series of chirps and

burps . . . and other noises you probably don't want to hear

about.

Faced with all that monkey business, LeBlanc can only mug

hopelessly, with a look of growing desperation on his photogenic

face. Poor guy. Not even Olivier or Streep could have pulled

this one off.

All six of the much-exposed Friends from TV have movies coming

out soon. LeBlanc -- who's Joey, the cute-but-dim one -- is the

first out of the pack here, playing secondbanana to a chimp. And

Ed should send him scampering back for the safety of his

friends. …
