Julian Foster needed 16 stitches to close the bloody gash above

his right eye.

Foster said he was injured last year in the Duval County jail by

two masked inmates who attacked him on orders from corrections

officer Ashley C. Stokes.

Stokes, 23, is on trial on charges of aggravated battery and

official misconduct in the April 22 incident.

The trial, which is expected to conclude today, pits defense

attorneys Judy Groover and Gary Baker against Assistant State

Attorney Michelline Haynes. They squared off last week at the

trial of John H. Pitts, a former Duval County corrections

officer charged with beating an inmate and official misconduct.

Pitts was acquitted.

In the Stokes case, Haynes told jurors yesterday that the

corrections officer orchestrated the attack on Foster, 19, then

warned the inmate he'd be beaten again if he told anyone.

Foster's fear initially prompted him to claim he was injured

during a fall, but he later told the truth about the assault,

Haynes said. …
