Singer's Life like a Song Faith Hill's Stardom Began with a Fib

Article excerpt

Faith Hill's life over the last year or so could be

a country song.

How's this for a storyline:

A teenager from Star, Miss., moves to Nashville to make

her mark as a singer. She gets nowhere and needs a day job.

She has secretarial skills and tries to get a job in a record

company office, but learns she has to lie about her singing

ambitions in order to land a job.

She does, gets hired and, while working late at night,

is discovered singing at her desk by a record company

executive.

She gets a recording contract and becomes a major success.

Her first single, Wild One goe to No. 1 and stays there for a month.

It's followed by more hits.

Then her career is threatened.

She needs throat surgery.

While recovering, unable to talk, her record executive

boyfriend proposes and she has to wait more than two weeks

before she can give him an answer.

The storybook career of Faith Hill is continuing with

her second album, It Matters to Me, a bonafide success.

The title cut is currently the No. 1 country single in the

land.

Hill performs tomorrow at the Florida Theatre.

This year Hill will be splitting her time between headlining

her own theater shows and opening for Tim McGraw in arenas.

She's been lucky enough to open for some of the biggest

names: Reba McEntire, George Strait and Alan Jackson.

But she's also had the knack of choosing good songs.

Besides Wild One, Piece of My Heart and Take

Me As I Am also went to No. 1.

Hill features several strong issue-oriented songs on

this album. The opening cut, Someone Else's Dream

is about a woman who has tried to please everyone and decides

it's now time to assert herself no matter what anyone thinks.

Jackson's I Can't Do That Anymore is about a woman

who is unhappy with always putting her husband's career

and wishes in front of her own.

But the most powerful song on this album is A Man's

Home is His Castle. Hill sings with a determined voice

in this song of spousal abuse.

"I've done songs with serious topics," she said in a

phone interview from her Nashville home. …
