Hilliard Keeps Winning Anyway

Article excerpt

Hilliard High School's boys basketball coach Matt Schreiber is

still a bit amazed at his team.

The Flashes returned only two varsity players from last year's

26-5 team that was ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A state poll for

seven consecutive weeks, so Schreiber wasn't sure what he'd get

this season.

But Hilliard assuaged its coach's fears, roaring off to a 15-5

start through Wednesday and a fifth-place ranking in last week's

Lewis, who is scoring 14.8 points and grabbing 6.3 rebounds per

game. Senior point guard Billy Williams, playing his first

season of organized basketball, is averaging 4.7 assists and has

been the defensive leader.

The Flashes have also gotten key contributions from their bench,

especially from sophomore Bish Braddock and Chad Beck, who leads

the team with 30 3-pointers.

"We're just about where we thought we'd be if everything went

right," Schreiber said. "Things are just now to the point where

everybody understands what we want to do. …
