Denver receivers coach Mike Heimerdinger has emerged as the Jaguars' top candidate to replace Chris Palmer as offensive coordinator.

The team formally has asked and received permission to speak with Heimerdinger, and coach Tom Coughlin planned to talk with Heimerdinger last night about setting up an interview this week. Coughlin said he hopes to name a coordinator this week.

"We want to get it done as soon as possible," said Coughlin, who may choose to simply hire a quarterbacks coach if something can't be worked out with Heimerdinger. Coughlin would then be the play-caller.

There is competition for Heimerdinger. He also is being sought by the Palmer-coached Cleveland Browns, who also have asked the Broncos for permission to interview. The Chicago Bears, according to Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, also are interested, although they hired Louisiana Tech coach Gary Crowton as their offensive coordinator last week.

The late frenzy for Heimerdinger had to be put off until after Denver's 34-19 Super Bowl victory over Atlanta on Sunday. …
