The Green Cove Middle School boys basketball team won the Florida Crown Conference basketball championship with a 13-1 record. The Florida Crown conference is a three-county conference with eight schools.

Kenneth McAllister, in his second year as coach, said the strength of the team was good team defense.

"The key is our defense that triggered our offense," McAllister said. "We played man to man, which is unusual for a junior high team, but we have the talent to do it."

In the starting lineup were Charles Clark, Curtis Francis, Jamon Tobler, Blaine Shine and Adam Godsey. The reserves were Koddie Tarpley, Alex Elliot, Ronald Watson, Adam Rapooza, Marvin Whigham, Grady Fleming, William Duke, Ian Garduque, Vincent Byrnes and Daniel Cooper.

The Cougars' lone defeat was a three-point loss to Orange Park Junior High. In a later rematch, they defeated OPJH by 18 points.

3V3 UPDATE: A 3V3 (three vs. three) soccer team in the Over 30 division from the Clay County Soccer Club finished fourth in the 3V3 Soccer Shootout National Finals held Jan. 16 in Pensacola.

Team member Bob Papuga said the team split the six games it played -- three wins and three losses. Overall on the season, the team was 13-5.

Papuga said the team qualified for the nationals by winning the regional competition held at the Disney World Sports Complex in Orlando in August.

Last season, the team (17-1) finished second in the nationals held in Lakeland.

Team members were Matt Waters, Andy Cordak, Domenic Tomara, Deigo Garcia and Papuga.

GROWING PAINS: It has been a tough year for most of the four new basketball coaches in the county. Although most of the coaches have suffered through a difficult year in regards to wins and losses, the reward has been in developing or improving their programs.

"We did not have one girl with varsity experience," said Kim Smith, the girls coach at Ridgeview High. …
