Raines WR Harris Picks Ohio State

Article excerpt

Maurice Harris has committed to Ohio State, The Florida Times-Union has learned.

Raines' star wide receiver, one of the state's top prospects at his position, chose the Buckeyes over Miami and Tennessee on a day that produced a flurry of commitments.

Locally, Mandarin's Harold McClendon chose Kansas. Florida State received a commitment from defensive end Darnell Dockett of Burtonsville (Md.) Paint Branch, one of the nation's top prospects at any position. The Gators added pledges from receiver Taylor Jacobs of Tallahassee FAMU, end Bobby McCray of Homestead and, in a surprise, linebacker Matt Farrior of Ettrick (Va.) Matoaca.

But the day's biggest surprise was Harris, for whom Tennessee and Miami were thought to be the leaders.

"I'm not sure where that came from, because Ohio State was my best visit," said Harris, who visited Miami over the weekend. "They like big wide receivers there, and I believe I can step in and play."

Harris said he was leaning to Ohio State entering his weekend visit to Miami, but did not make up his mind until yesterday. He has yet to qualify academically but is very close. Harris visited the Buckeyes Oct. 15.

"It was warm when I went, but I know it gets cold up there," Harris said. "Everybody warned me I'll be playing in snow, but I don't care."

Harris (6-2, 208 pounds) was a Times-Union Super 11, Super 24 and Super 75 selection. His 182 receiving yards against Belle Glade Glades Central in 1997 set a record for a Florida state title game.

"The way Ohio State puts guys in the pros was a factor, too," said Harris, who was joined on his official visit to Ohio State by Raines teammate Lito Sheppard. "When me and Lito went up there, we saw a scout from the 49ers as soon as we walked in the door. That made an impression."

McClendon chose Kansas after rushing for more than 1,000 yards as a senior at Mandarin. …
