Two Jacksonville brothers ushered in the new year with a bang, each bagging a notable buck Jan. 1 within minutes of each other in Nassau County.

Jason Whitehead, 20, shot a 10-pointer at Nassau Wildlife Management Area that unofficially scored 117 under the Boone & Crockett system. Eric Whitehead, 25, took an 8-point buck that scored 105 on private land formerly part of Nassau WMA.

"To get a 100-class buck in Florida, that's something," said Richard Whitehead, father of the young men.

Jason shot his deer late in the day with a new 30-06 Weatherby given to him by his father for Christmas. The buck walked in from behind and to the right of Jason's tree stand, forcing him to shoot left-handed from about 40-50 yards.

Eric's deer, which appeared late in the afternoon on a grassy road between two thickets, required a shot of about 170 yards.

"I thought it was pretty neat for two brothers to score like that on the same day," Richard said. "It just doesn't hardly ever happen."

Earlier this season, the brothers achieved another deer double. On a hunt near Tallahassee on Dec. 10, Eric shot a spike and Jason downed a 4-pointer.

Those with gift certificates from the shop on St. Johns Avenue are being asked to redeem them this month. Shop owner Hamilton Franz will continue to work in corporate sales for Bienville Plantation near White Springs and as a fishing guide.

Fishermen will be able to pick the brains of area captains Jan. 21 during Guides Night at The Salty Feather fly shop on Southside Boulevard.
