Last-Gasp Try Gives First Victory

GUISBOROUGH won their first game of the Yorkshire Division One season in their derby against Middlesbrough with a pulsating last-gasp try.

They have been close to breaking their duck on several occasions this season, but it all came together for them against their local rivals.

They took the lead with an early penalty by Joe Whyman, but Middlesbrough hit back when Peter Homan went over, with Matthew Todd converting, and then Harry Bryce went over for a 12-3 lead.

Guisborough built up the pressure, and Whyman kicked two penalties to get within three points, before Lewis Robson ran almost half the length of the field to complete a great counter attack, with Whyman again converting for 16-12.

Andy Micklewright hit back for a try in the corner that was converted to put Middlesbrough 19-16 up, but again the accurate Whyman kicked a penalty.

But it was Guisborough who had enough in the tank to win the game, when they turned the ball over, and a good move ended with Robson triumphantly scoring under the posts, with Whyman again converting for a 26-19 win.

Guisborough are still bottom, but with this victory are now confident that they can overtake second bottom Old Rishworthians. They have a tough away game at Heath his week.

Middlesbrough have dropped to seventh and are at home to Moortown.

In Durham and Northumberland Division One, after a great win in their previous game against Hartlepool Rovers, Acklam lost 39-20 at Gateshead to drop back down to third bottom of the table.

They were also quite frustrated, because they were in the lead at half time.

Gateshead scored an early converted try, but Acklam hit back with a good run by Danny Ashton who set up Brad Gater to go over the line, with Marcus Sudron converting.

But an Acklam knock-on let Gateshead back in for a try, although Sudron pulled three points back with a penalty. …
