SCHOOLS are so poorly funded on Teesside that a headteacher is paying for a staff member's salary, an MP has claimed.

Labour MP for Redcar, Anna Turley, slammed government cuts to school budgets, which she claims are forcing headteachers to try desperate measures to protect children's education.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Ms Turley said staff in Redcar and Cleveland have been regraded or had their hours cut.

And in one case, a staff member had been funded from a headteacher's personal salary.

Turley In a debate on education funding, Ms Turley said: "I want to set out the reality of what this means for our schools. Our teachers are going above and beyond to try to make sure the children are not affected by the scale of these cuts.

In one school, a member of staff has suggested that staff were regraded for one day a week to make savings on the staffing costs.

Ms Turley said she'd spoken to two staff members who had refused to apply for pay rises they were entitled to due to fears about the school's spending, and that support staff on 15-hour contracts have had their hours cut by a third.

"One of the things that struck me to the core, was when I was told by one headteacher that, after making one of the cleaning staff redundant to meet the budget that year, he is now paying that member of cleaning staff from his own salary," she continued.

"That is a ridiculous situation for us to be in in this country."
