Article excerpt

ICON trails, which appear to be popular with children, are becoming a regular feature in UK cities' tourist campaigns.

Teesside has at least two opportunities to exploit the icon concept.

A) Captain Cook heritage: planting flora at key central locations in Teesside towns.

Expand the existing wild flower distribution to include all Teesside parks, and key locations including visitor attractions, the trails around Eston nab and Newton under Roseberry, and key village and river bank locations...

The displays should reflect the international nature of places Cook visited, and the ethnic diversity of his crews.

Involve Kew Gardens in the design process; Kew's existence owes much to the Captain Cook voyages.

B) Exploit our major bridge building experience. An icon trail that includes details including graphic images and design and build specs, and best exemplifies the international nature of Teesside's present and past bridge building heritage.

Teesside councils and taxpayers have invested heavily in their airport, but its future will also depend upon attracting more national and international visitors to Teesside.

Fortunately, Teesside already hosts many great international companies that complement our international heritage.
