Auto Accidents Claim 5 Lives during Holiday

Five people were killed in traffic accidents on the roads and highways of Northeast Florida during the long holiday weekend, authorities reported.

The accidents happened Friday and yesterday in Duval, Nassau, St. Johns, Putnam and Columbia counties.

A young man died yesterday in Nassau County when he lost control of his car, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

David Scott Love, 19, of Yulee was killed when the 1996 Saturn he was driving north on Miner Road about 8:45 a.m. smashed into trees by the curb and then flipped three times. A passenger in the car, Pamela Dawn Love, 25, also of Yulee, escaped the one-vehicle crash with minor injuries. She was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital, the report said. Patrol officials said Love lost control of the car while trying to pass another vehicle.

A 29-year-old man was killed yesterday in a one-car crash at Southside Boulevard and Fraser Road in Jacksonville, police said.

Joaquin Reyes, address unknown, was killed. Police said Reyes crossed over the median of Southside Boulevard about 2:15 a.m. and the 1995 Toyota flipped over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 66-year-old Miami man was killed Friday afternoon after a car in which he was a passenger collided with another car on U.S. 1 in St. Johns County, the highway patrol said. Both cars were heading north.

The crash killed Alberto Velez and injured the driver of his car, Jeffrey Hoy, 36, of Valdosta, Ga., and passenger, 4-year-old Sabrina Hoy, also of Valdosta, patrol officials said.

Jeffrey Hoy was listed in fair condition yesterday at Shands Jacksonville. Sabrina Hoy was critical but stable, a nursing supervisor said.

The occupants of the other car were not injured.

A head-on collision on Florida 20 about 4 miles west of Palatka left one man dead Friday night and two others injured.

David Bates, 31, of Palatka was killed when his car crossed the center line at 8:30 p.m. and struck another car head-on, a patrol report said. …
