DYLAN McGeouch says Sunderland's confidence is building - helped by supporters who are "like a magnet dragging the ball into the net".

McGeouch was full of praise for the character his side showed after coming from 1-0 down to beat Rochdale 2-1 with goals from Charlie Wyke and substitute George Honeyman, in the 89th minute.

The Black Cats are now only behind second-placed Barnsley on one goal's difference, and have the first of two games in hand at home to Burton Albion tomorrow.

"The wheels are going and we keep it going," commented Scotland international McGeouch, whose start at Accrington Stanley last week was his first since January. "The confidence is building. "We have three games at home now (against Burton, Coventry City and Doncaster Rovers) and hopefully we can take full advantage to keep the pressure on, keep ourselves up there.

"The fans have been with us home and away when times have been tougher, you could see it at Accrington after Wembley (where Sunderland lost the Football League Trophy final in a penalty shoot-out against Portsmouth), it's excellent, they are behind us. To give them that joy feels great.

"We have to keep winning games and look after ourselves. We have to keep going, we will look behind and in front at others, but if we keep winning, that is what matters."

Sunderland fans made up 3,378 of the 6,546 at Rochdale on Saturday, and their support for Wyke and the team as a whole paid off.

"Everywhere we go we sell out," said former Heart of Midlothian player McGeouch. "You can see what it means, they are all so passionate in the city.

"You can see what football is all about - the passion, the last-minute goal from the skipper. Charlie coming back in the team as well, you can see all of our character. …
