EASTLEIGH1 GATESHEAD 0 GATESHEAD'S lack of goals will ultimately cost them a place in the Vanarama National League play-offs.

They have scored just once in their last four games and taken only one point from the last six games.

Captain Scott Barrow, midfield man Greg Olley and defender Mike Williamson all went close at Eastleigh.

The Spitfires rarely threatened but found the goal they needed to maintain their own promotion push.

Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Reda Johnson's towering header was all that separated the two sides.

A second consecutive 1-0 defeat left Gateshead in 10th place, seven points from the play-offs with three games to go.

Victory in Hampshire would have set up the last two weeks as rivals Sutton United and Ebbsfleet both lost at home.

The Heed would have been one point from the top seven - but can now only reflect on what might have been.

"We're not going to get where we wanted to be, where we probably should have got to," said manager Ben Clark.

"We played well in patches without really creating enough chances but it's out of our hands now.

"It's been the same for the last couple of games, we've played lovely football up to a point without doing enough to win.

"We've not won a lot of football games of late.

"It's very disappointing, especially conceding from a set-piece.

"We were the better team in the second half but it's a results business and it's going to cost us come the end of the season."

Gateshead host one of the league's big guns, Chesterfield, on Good Friday before travelling to Harrogate on Easter Monday.

At Eastleigh the home side ended a run of three defeats through a 16thminute set-piece.

Sam Matthews delivered a lofted corner beyond the back post where Johnson looped a header into the far corner of the net. …
