One That Got Away Conquerors Dominate, but Still Lose

Article excerpt

GAINESVILLE -- Having disposed of the top two ranked teams in Class 2A in the playoffs, it looked as if no opponent could stop the Trinity Christian Academy football team. That was again the case yesterday in the 2A title game against Frostproof.

But the Conquerors beat themselves.

Third-ranked Trinity failed five times on fourth-down conversions in Bulldogs territory, and unranked Frostproof made a first-quarter touchdown pass stand up in upsetting the Conquerors 6-0 yesterday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Trinity twice blew chances at the start of the second half. The first drive ended when quarterback Gerard Ross fumbled a snap, the only time the Conquerors lost the ball in seven fumbles, and Frostproof recovered. The Bulldogs turned it over on the next play, but Trinity failed to convert another fourth down when Ross overthrew Robby Tebow in the end zone.

"I was scared to death at the beginning of the second half," said Frostproof coach Bill Pierstoff. …
