I HAVE decided not stand for reelection as an Eston independent ward councillor.

I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all who have supported me during my 12 years as a councillor, residents, friends and family.

I have certainly had some unbelievable experiences and my eyes opened as to the dark side of local politics, especially in my first eight years.

For it all boils down to power and money and what some will stoop to this gain.

So many smokescreens given out to the public. But I think the people are realising this with all the fiasco in parliament. Regardless, it has been worth it for me speaking up for my community.

I speak truthfully, and would like to thank Cllr Bob Norton, Labour councillor for Teesville ward, which takes in part of Eston, for working together with me in our area over the last four years.

We have achieved so by putting political differences to one side, working together for the good of our areas.

The new town square, the Eston Nab Race (now an annual event in the council calendar), Eston Markets and Christmas events, the million pound funding for Eston town centre, two developers in talks with the council, regarding the precinct.

Two grants schemes for Eston businesses, working with the allotment holders in our area.

I have worked with our smashing neighbourhood team, putting in place the Boyds for the different estates in the ward.

Along with the public realms funding, which will see all ERA heritage features in and around Eston lit up.

Supported the council buying Hillsview Nursing Home, being converted into a respite and rehabilitation centre.

The moral of this is all councillors should be working together for the good of borough and their communities, as they promise on election instead of the boys' club scenario, dealing out the money positions for votes in the council. …
