School's Change of Name Labelled 'Marketing Plot'

HEATON Manor is no more - the school just off the Coast Road will officially become 'Jesmond Park Academy' to its 1,775 pupils.

School leaders say the change marks a "fresh start" for the school, which became embroiled in controversy after being graded 'Inadequate' by Ofsted in 2017 following the sudden departure of its head teacher.

But some locals have labelled it a "marketing plot" and insisted "it's not in Jesmond - it's in Heaton".

The new name is in honour of one of the roads the school sits off, Jesmond Park West.

We everyone come to The change comes as Heaton Manor's academy sponsor, the group of schools which will take over its running and be responsible for improvements, is confirmed as Gosforth Federated Academies, who run Gosforth Academy as well as the former Seaton Burn College (now North Gosforth Academy).

new The academy chain has pledged to fund a full set of all uniformed branded with a school badge for every pupil, to help tackle increased costs as a result of the name change.

Head Karen Blackburn said: "Last July's visit by Her Majesty's Inspectors found much to praise in the school. They said that 'the school has made rapid progress,' which we continue to build upon.

"We are looking forward to joining Gosforth Federated Academies and becoming Jesmond Park Academy. We have received lots of positive feedback about the name, with staff and pupils excited about the changes taking place.

"Not only does the new name reflect the school's history and address, but it aligns the school to the Trust's ethos and vision, enabling educational coherence across the area."

George Snaith, chair of Gosforth Federated Academies, added: "The trustees and governors are sure that all parents, staff and pupils will come to love the new name and embrace the way it signals a fresh start and new identity for the school. …
