Lots of Layers to Kurilpa's Latest EP

Article excerpt

EMERGE'S Calen Le Couteur caught up with Will, Cente and Pablo from Brisbane quintet Kurilpa Reach to talk about their latest single, Best End, and East Coast tour.

Earlier this month you released your latest single, Best End, what can you tell us about the track?

W: It's a track I wrote probably around a year ago now just on the acoustic, it was one of those ones where I just started playing some chords and singing some lyrics to it. I think it must have after a night in West End where I was just thinking about as the topic cause that's what it's centred around.

C: Like an homage, sort of (laughs).

W: I had the structure of the verse, chorus and bridge and had lyrics for the verse and chorus, then Luke came round and we finished off some of the writing. I think you can tell that when we did it acoustically the form changed a little bit with the outro and some of the words.

P: Yeah we sat on it for ages, trying to rework a whole bunch of stuff.

P: We'd get a bit carried away and add on a little bit too much, then we reined it in.

W: We made it a bit more simpler in the end, and are pretty happy with it. James, our producer really pushed us to bring in new ideas, a lot of harmonies and things we normally wouldn't really think of. Lots of layers.

Was the recording process much different than recording Fool's Fall?

W: Yeah, probably on the other side of the spectrum from Fool's Fall.

P: With our EP everything was tracked separately but for this one we went into a live room and recorded everything at once. So we put the drums and bass down then we'd go back in and rework everything else. …
