Article excerpt

Topics including ethics in the medical industry and the uneven availability of quality health care will be the highlights of a conference at University of North Florida next month.

UNF will be hosting the health care symposium from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 17 at the University Center. It is the inaugural event for the Center for Ethics, Public Policy and the Professions, in cooperation with the school's Department of Philosophy and the College of Health.

The symposium will give state and local health care officials and educators the opportunity to discuss the social and economic aspects of health care.

Speakers include Madison Powers of Georgetown University; Pam Chally, dean of UNF's College of Health; Jeff Goldhagen, director of the Duval County Health Department; Melissa Rehfus of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida; Brian Klepper, a local health care consultant; and Bob Norton, president of Shands Jacksonville.

Discussions will include the social consequences of the rapid development of medical technology and the related increase in costs for medical care, excessive Medicare spending and the growing number of uninsured.

The registration deadline is Feb. 10. The cost is $20 for nonstudents, $10 for students.
