NEWCASTLE United must face up to the tactical know-how of Wolverhampton Wanderers chief Nuno Espirito Santo for their first game of pre-season in Nanjing.

Compared to the usual standard of opening pre-season opponents this will provide a stiff test for the Magpies against the side that finished seventh in the Premier League last term and qualified for the Europa League.

In previous years Newcastle have warmed up against St Patrick's Athletic in Ireland and Hearts from the SPL.

Although, it has to be said that Wolves go into the clash with Newcastle looking different to the side that enjoyed such a great first campaign after promotion last season.

Nuno has just 12 senior outfield players on duty in China with a host of players, including last season's 17-goal top scorer Raul Jimenez, all rested due to various international commitments this summer.

Therefore the Wolves side that line up against Newcastle have a few youthful faces in it.

Newcastle are also looking a little different to last season with six members of the Under-23 squad plus the likes of Achraf Lazaar, Rolando Aarons and Freddie Woodman all spent time in the second string last term.

There's no Salomon Rondon anymore for United while Mo Diame and Ayoze Perez's exits have depleted Newcastle even more.

Nevertheless, Nuno is not taken United lightly. Speaking before the game, which kicks off at 11am UK time tomorrow, Nuno said: "It is going to be tough because we have a very short squad, we brought a lot of boys, under-18s to help us. "We prepare ourselves, but at the same time we are in a different environment, so we have to be flexible, patient and try to do our job. The opposition is very good.

"We're going to play against Newcastle and then we'll see.

"The Asia Trophy is very important, a very good competition. …
