PS36m for Unproven Striker Is a Giant Gamble; GOAL RECORD DOES NOT TALLY WITH TRANSFER FEE FOR BRAZILIAN FORWARD

Article excerpt

IF Steve Bruce has walked into a pressure cooker with his eyes wide open, then Joelinton may well follow him without realising he too will have extra weight upon his shoulders.

Because not only will the Brazilian be Newcastle's record signing at a whopping PS36m but he will be joining a club where number nines are legends.

Joelinton will have to justify both. Can he? Well, let me say straight away the fee is huge, whether or not it is paid in instalments. More of that in a while.

As a centre-forward he has to follow in the footsteps of strikers who have been great goalscorers, starting with Hughie Gallacher back in the twenties through Jackie Milburn and myself on to Alan Shearer.

The common denominator has been goals yet there is nothing in Joelinton's record to suggest he can become a PS36m is guy with record ... a over half of bandied have been Malcolm 25-goal-a-season man.

When I joined United, I had scored 32 goals the previous season, albeit not in the top flight, while Shearer had been knocking in goals since notching a hat-trick against Arsenal on his debut as a 17-year-old.

He had also top scorer when Blackburn Rovers won the Premier League title in 1994.

Age will not help Joelinton either. I was 21 when I arrived so he is not too young at 22.

I wish him all the best, I really do, because I want Newcastle's No 9 to succeed.

We need more than him, of course. The club have lost their two top scorers, Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon, this summer and while Miguel Almiron can play in the withdrawn role behind Joelinton - a position occupied by Perez - there is no back-up whatsoever.

Yoshinori Muto has never looked like he will be the answer from day one and even with Dwight Gayle back United must get more firepower at their disposal.

extreme for a Joelinton's fee a little the figure would right Macdonald I was United's record buy when I arrived but PS36m is extreme for a guy with Joelinton's record. …
