Rugby union: Heated contests are synonymous with finals football. For the clash between Slade Point and the Kuttabul Camelboks it was no different.

It was a do-or-die affair on Saturday afternoon, with the winner progressing to week two of the Mackay rugby union finals. For the losing side, their dreams of premiership glory would come to an end.

Slade Point were up against it from the get-go as they were only able to field 11 players for the start of the match.

Kuttabul capitalised on the lopsided numbers, and even as their opposition gained additional troops it was too little too late in the 45-19 encounter.

Victorious Camelboks coach Scott McPherson was jubilant for his side, but knew there was more work to be done.

"We made a tough win out of what should have been a bit easier a game, especially when they only had 11," McPherson said.

"We were too loose with the ball, trying to score off every play ... we're a little more structured than that and we don't drop the ball as much so we have a lot to work on."

The respective forward packs clashed with ferocious intensity, a style which played into Kuttabul's hands according to McPherson.

"We're a forward team, Kuttabul has always been a forward team. That's the way we like to play and let the backs do all the pretty work."

Camelboks winger Joji Williams made pretty look beautiful with some scintillating runs down the left-hand sideline.

His brace of tries showcased speed and strength which may prove crucial next week against the Mackay City Redmen.

Work commitments limited Williams' ability to train in the lead up, but his pace blew any cobwebs out well and truly. …
