Semi Runs over 7-Year-Old Boy Dies on Mayport Street near Grandparents' Restaurant

A 7-year-old Mayport boy died yesterday when he ran under a semi's rear tires on Florida A1A by his grandparents' restaurant, police said.

Louis Floyd Jr., a first-grader at Mayport Elementary School, died at the scene about 4:50 p.m.

The boy was standing in front of Bill & Angie's Seafood Place with a man before dashing into the street, Detective George Gazdick of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said. Police did not identify the man with Louis.

A truck with U.S. Postal Service markings struck the boy as it headed west in the 4500 block of Florida A1A, near Pearl Street.

No one else was injured in the accident.

Gazdick said he doesn't think other vehicles struck the child.

Gazdick said the accident would be investigated and no charges had been filed yesterday. The name of the truck driver was not released.

"Louis was a good kid. He was just super," said William Permenter, principal at Mayport Elementary. "Last year, I would ride the kindergarten bus with him, and he would say, 'Sit here and we can talk. …
