SEAN Longstaff admits 'it is going to take a bit of time' for him to get back to where he was before he suffered a serious knee injury - but has vowed to improve with each game he plays for Newcastle United.

The 22-year-old spent five months on the sidelines after sustaining knee ligament damage in March and returned to action in the Premier League Asia Trophy earlier this summer.

Longstaff started the Magpies' first game of the season against Arsenal, but Steve Bruce benched the midfielder at Norwich six days later because he did not want to place too many demands on him too quickly following the first major injury of his career.

Although disappointed to be left out, Longstaff had the perfect response - impressing when he came on at Carrow Road in the second half - and was restored to the starting line-up for the trip to Spurs, where he played a full 90 minutes.

Longstaff's mature displays before the injury had piqued the interest of Manchester United but the North Shields lad believes it will take time and a run of games to get back to that level again.

He said after the 1-0 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium: "You want to play as many games as you can.

"Arsenal was my first proper game in five months.

"You can play all the pre-season games you want but there is nothing quite like playing in the Premier League.

"I am a professional.

You get your head down, work hard and do as much as you can to get back in the team.

"You cheer on the lads when you are on the sidelines and this week I was given my chance again. There are probably little bits of quality I need to touch up on but I think that will only come with playing games. I am playing better week on week.

"Like the manager said, it is probably going to take a bit of time. …
