The phrase 'greenwashing' was coined in the Eighties to label dubious environmental claims from corporations covering up unsustainable business practices. Yet today, untold companies are putting their money where their mouth is. They're embracing sustainability like never before - both because there is a moral duty to, and a business case for, delivering value to all stakeholders, not just shareholders.

"Purpose has become the new currency of business," says Amanda Scott, Great Britain head of talent and rewards at consultants Willis Towers Watson. "Business is not sustainable without sustainability."

In this four-page supplement, we chart a tectonic shift in the role of business in society. Companies are increasingly embracing the triple bottom line, evaluating their social, environmental and financial performance.

CLIMATE CHANGE The transformation is driven, in part, by the millennial generation that is chiefly concerned about climate change and is rapidly moving into leadership roles.

Meanwhile, sustainability is driving many consumers' purchase decisions. In addition to this, investors are divesting from stocks with poor sustainability performance. Governments around the world have also adopted ambitious targets to curb carbon emissions.
